About Accompong Maroon Culture Camp

AMCC started in 2009 as a one-off event aimed at teaching Maroon youth Maroon indigenous knowledge and traditional practices, organised by the then Accompany Maroon Junior Council. In 2015 it was revised as an annual two-week long summer school that not only serves to maintain our specialist knowledge in future generations, but to instill and inspire in our youth a sense of pride and community. Open to Maroon children ages 4-20 both in the village and surrounding areas, AMCC teaches Maroon history, plant knowledge, traditional drumming, and craft-making, as well as engaging Maroon youth in topical debates about indigenous rights.

The camp is organised by the Accompong Maroon Youth Cultural Group and is funded largely by the OBey Foundation, as well as from the support of individuals. This year's prizes for the Culture camp King and Queen were generously donated by Appleton Estate, while refreshments were provided by World Brand.
